Developing Resilience

Developing Resilience is a change management course developed by RDR Group.

Our unique approach to change management highlights the human element in an organization’s ability to adapt.

This course addresses the underlying issues affecting progress in the effort to achieve cultural transformation. It is designed to infuse optimism, fortitude, and team spirit into your workplace as it undergoes change.

This is much more than a pep talk. Participants will learn the mechanics of how to respond constructively to challenges so that they can turn transitions into opportunities for growth.

Course Overview

Resilience and Survival

  • We define resilience as “the ability to adapt to change with speed and agility.”
  • We then present a central business model demonstrating how personal and organizational growth require constant transformation.

Lack of Resilience and Stress

  • We analyze the components of stress using an activity and a personal assessment.
  • Participants learn that it is not the events themselves that trigger stress, but rather our reaction to them. We focus on three common responses: victim mode, in which people become defeated; survivor mode, in which people just acquiesce and try to get by; navigator mode, in which people actually leverage the change and thrive as a result.

Navigating Change

At this point in the course, we spend some time outlining the human response to change. We ask participants to recount changes they’ve gone through and to identify resources that helped them, as well as elaborate on what they’ve gained from the experience.

Helping Others Navigate

  • The longer we remain stuck, the greater the drain on morale and productivity. We work with participants to teach them how to assist others through navigating change.
  • It’s often difficult to communicate our needs while experiencing change, so we focus on behavioral signs associated with change, as well as appropriate responses to these various signs. We facilitate skill practice roleplay scenarios for a variety of behaviors and responses.

Optimism in the Face of Change

We establish some ground rules for resilience:

  • Taking responsibility and refusing to blame
  • Being proactive and solution-oriented

We also discuss the proper “perceptual lens”:

  • We distinguish between a “skeptical” and an “expectant” lens
  • We highlight probable outcomes of having each perspective

We introduce an important technique called “TREC Analysis”:

  • Identify the “Triggering event” causing the difficulty.
  • Examine the “Rationalizations” creating negativity.
  • Recognize the “Effects” of unhealthy thoughts.
  • Achieve “Clarification” by re-framing events.
Participants will then gather into table groups to practice TREC Analysis with actual events they are facing.


This course ends with an action planning exercise, in which participants brainstorm in groups regarding how they, their teams, and the whole organization can begin developing greater resilience.
